THE END?!

So bloggers! My recording, editing, posting, updating, stressing, typing, creating is all coming to an end! My A2 media work is done and dusted after all the hard work and I am so so so pleased with my progress and my blog and how I have made it my own! I have loved seeing myself develop and grow in the media world and enhance my skills on the way - minus the struggles and problems we have bumped into on the journey here!

I feel my skills and knowledge within the media industry have come so far and I don't even need to say that.. just look at my previous AS thriller opening and try not to laugh (and then compare it to my latest media edition of my music video EEK!). The research and work I have put into this course have really paid off and I am now able to use multiple editing softwares, cameras, general media equipment and can even engage in conversation about these topics with other people - who knew I'd ever be a media wizard ;)

I am proud of my blog and believe the research, planning and evaluation of media and music videos represented throughout my blog show my progression and hard work (sweat and blood) within the course! I will be gladly taking away all my skills from the past two years and hopefully carry on building on them to amplify my understanding of the media industry!

Thank you for coming back and keeping updated on my blog and I shall hopefully see you in the future!.. Who knows, I might have another blog educating others on media, instead of me being the one learning currently haha!

EVALUATION - QUESTION 1

Hi guys, the next 4 blog post will be revolved around the evaluation of my A2 music video and ancillary tasks. There will be four questions related to my work and all will be presented in different ways. My evaluation is the last part of my A2 coursework and will be the last few blogs on here. So please stick around to read them all!

Question 1 - In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

PS - I sincerely apologise for the amount of laughing and awkward faces you see in this video! Myself (in the middle) and Brooke (on the right) are not used to being infront of the camera and found it difficult to compose ourselves!

CD cover - Before pictures

Hi Guys, the next post you will see after this is the completed CD cover with the insert, front cover and back cover. So, to make it more interesting for viewers, I am posting the 'before' shots of the pictures we have used. These pictures are unedited and have not been touched so you will be able to compare them to the next blog post of the final piece and see the transformation between the 2!

These will be the main pictures you see, as we have used them for the front and back cover. The insert however has a slight twist. Instead of using one picture we took, we decided to use an actual video clip but screenshot it from different angles. We did this multiple times and I think it creates a great effect and a sense of individuality which we personally, as a group LOVE! (It's all about standing out from the crowd).

Keep a look out for my next post!

FINAL MUSIC VIDEO (and website)

DRUM ROLL PLEASE...

Here is the final music video production, filmed, edited, export and UPLOADED and is now visible for you all to see via YouTube! And, to make the day even better... the website is completed too! Here is the link:

http://savannahsaltt.wixsite.com/mysite

I hope you all enjoy looking at both, it took a lot of time and effort but now both our main product and our ancillary tasks are completed! The album cover and insert will be uploaded as soon as possible but we are struggling to export it and get it printed at the moment, so please be patient!

It is not exactly how we planned any of our products to go, but all ideas change and adapt when you are actually in the progress of creating the products so, it may not match to our original shot list or one page pitch, but the ideas are similar and have just been developed in order for us to create a video to the best of our ability. I will speak about the changes, developments. feedback and even more topics in my evaluation which will be coming up in the next couple of weeks. So, if you are interested about by views and thoughts (along with others opinions) on my coursework.. stay tuned.

CD Cover Textual Analysis

This post is focusing on CD covers, why they are created and how different artists include their own characteristics within the covers. I have used two examples of both a pop artist, Ed Sheeran and a more R&B influenced artist, Chris Brown. Last time, I used Katy Perry as she was similar to the artists song we have covered for a final music video, meaning we were able to get influence and ideas from her, for our own CD covers. I have decided to do this research now as we have recently been creating our own CD cover for 'Savannah' (the artist of our music video) and I want to fully understand the meaning of CD covers and why they are used before my own are finalised.

Website Update

So guys, as you would have seen from a previous blog post, we now have merchandise.. and what's the point in merchandise if no-one can see it or buy it?! So, as of today, it is now available on our website! With a quick change and update to the website, we have added a new page which is extremely easy to access. All you have to do is type in our website link to your search bar and you will be directed straight onto the home page of the website. At the top of the page there are 8 clear tabs which are labels for each page we have on the website. Previously, we had 7, but as you can see, we now have a 'SHOP' page!! So exciting!

Whichever page you are on, on the website will be highlighted. For example, above I clicked on the SHOP page and as you can see, it is highlighted in a turquoise colour, to make it clear to any viewer, which area of the website you are on. Then, once you have clicked the tab, this is what you will see:

OUR MERCHANDISE! We have not yet added all of our merch, there is still some being currently in the process of being created but our focus at the minute is to finish the music video, so it is currently on hold! (I will obviously give you an update, once it is live and available to look at). So, as you can see from the picture above, we have made each piece of merchandise be positioned one another - we felt this looked most professional and eye catching rather than having them in rows and it appearing overwhelming. There is also two other items already on the SHOP page, but if you want to see them, you will have to have a look for yourself! All you have to do is click the link below!

We now have merchandise?!

Hi Guys, I have an update on something really exciting... MERCHANDISE!
We have created a couple of different pieces of merchandise including, 2 options of hoodies, a phone case and a backpack! We feel these will be great staple pieces which will appeal to a wide audience. Our target audience is, as stated before, mainly the younger/teen bracket and the majority will typically be female, however, we don't want to block out any male viewers or reduce our audience in any way, shape or form; so the main aim of the merchandise was to make it appealing and wearable by all! I feel like we met this aim very well however, it did mean we had to keep the merch' pretty simple by having grey, white and black colours, with the logo placed in different locations on the different items.

Before the merchandise was created, we had envisioned including a range of different colours/patterns such as pastel colours, but this can massively reduce peoples interest in the items as they aren't seen as wearable colours when you compare them to the more neutral colours. We took into consideration what we, as teenagers wear ourselves, along with a vast amount of other teenagers and what we received from this was that, neutral colours are extremely more popular and seen a lot more frequently on a day to day basis. So, as a result of this, we thought we would keep our merchandise neutral to keep the appeal high.

Below you can see the items we have created and now our next step is to add these onto our websites! We have not yet mastered how to do this, but the research is in process and once it is on and accessible, I will update you on my 'Website' page of my blog and attach a link!

Why does an artist need merchandise?
Effective merchandising has a significant positive impact on sales. Pricing, product display, packaging, and promotional marketing can shoot sales upwards and give the customers a memorable online shopping experience, this can be done through easy access of our website. Customers are more likely to return in the future if they find our website easy to use and well organized.

Free Advertisement: When a fan purchases a t-shirt with your band logo on it, they are essentially paying you to advertise your band for you. When they wear the shirt, anyone they come into contact with throughout the day gets to read your band logo. The same goes for anything else you put your band name on and sell.

Revenue: With music piracy so prevalent, music practically comes for free; so much so that you have to offer fans another way to support you.

Customers are more likely to return to a brand that offers top quality products in a customer-friendly and easy-to-access setting. Offering fresh product arrangements online in appealing displays entices shoppers to return frequently, building long-term loyal customer and fan base relationships.

Research for editing skills

Hi guys.. quick update time! In terms of editing, the music video is going great. We are working efficiently both independantly and as a team to get the music video done as soon as possible but to the best standard. We know as a group the overall theme we are going for, meaning we are able to edit separately in our free time and don't always need to be as a group; this makes it a lot easier for us as we can get the video done in a quicker time gap in comparison to our previous work together - last years thriller opening - which took a lot longer as we mainly only edited when the whole group was present.

The video only has around 20 seconds left of editing to finish before we have a full sequence finished for the whole time length of the song. However, we may also go back in and change some areas or add certain effects if we feel it would make it better.

Anyway, I'm rambling! The whole point of this post was firstly, to give you a quick update and secondly, show you what I have been researching about. My research has consisted of a watching a lot of YouTube tutorials (easiest to learn from) along with reading articles and step by step methods on how to create an effect I want. The effect is based around a 'glitch' effect which I want to use multiple times throughout the video. I feel it will create a bit more interest through the middle of the video, as at the moment, I think the start and end to the music video are currently the best parts.

The glitch effect will go in-between shots of the artist, Eloise, in a happy environment and then in a sad state to represent a great contrast of her feelings. The shots of Eloise upset will be have smeared lipstick on and her eye makeup ruined to show she has been crying, and the glitch effect will go just before these shots to create more emphasis on the shots and show their meaning. Here are some of the websites I used to help me create a glitch of my own. (Giving all credit to these for helping us):

Website 'Gallery' Update

Here is a quick update on the website and the different sections I have been working on. This post will focus on the 'gallery' section of the website which shows pictures of the artists and her characteristics and personalities. Further updates will be posted on the other sections of the website as soon as they are completed to a high standard, but for now, enjoy learning more about the artist through the use of images!

Second day of filming

After hours of filming, we have finally completed day two of filming.. We could have carried on but the battery died and we had the wrong battery charger!
Todays filming consisted of the main 'studio' shots which will appear the most in the music video. To make continuity in the music video easier for ourselves, when recording a certain shot in a different angle, Eloise (the singer/artist) sang the whole song through from start to finish. This will make it easier for us in the editing stage as if we want to change/adapt the shot list plan we previously made, we are able to do this. By singing the whole song through for each angle we filmed in, it also means when we go to put the clips together, the continuity is likely to be at a better standard and flow much easier as we can put clips over one another, or extend or reduce them when needed.

The majority of the clips we filmed were located in Eloise's house in an empty room - the walls were purple which is essential for the editing part, as we are able to make the background into a green screen. Using this location was a very late decision as we had previously planned to use the green screen provided by school which you can read about in my previous filming blog update, but basically the green screen was not big enough for what we wanted/needed. The purple wall we ended up using was a great size and allowed us to fit in Eloise in any angle and shot we wanted - standing up, sitting down, close up shot, long shot and so on.

(Location of filming)

We filmed a range of different shots and angles of Eloise in two different outfits/looks. The first look being a very feminine theme with a dress on, lots of makeup and curled hair. The second look we went for was one of Eloise being upset; for this we smudged her lipstick and her eye makeup to make it appear that she had been crying. This matches the genre of the song and the lyrics which appear in it (which you will see when the final product is released). The shots we filmed will be used in a short burst throughout the final music video with most clips only being shown for a maximum of 8 seconds and some being used as little as 3 seconds.

As we have filmed in bulk for the majority for the past 2 times of filming, we will have very few filming days as we decided as a group that filming in bulk was better for the music video as it reduces the chance of having any continuity problems e.g. different lighting or different objects in the shots or different makeup on the artist. Our next day of filming will be in the next couple of days and it will be in this same location to get the rest of the shots we have planned (including, SNEAK PEAK, a shot of a glass falling and smashing), so make sure you're looking out for the 'Third day of filming' blog post!

Creation of Instagram

I know what you're thinking... why are you called 'SaltSisters11'?? Well, we thought that it would be better to use the company's name instead of the artists name. We can use posts to update viewers on the artists' progress via her management - because she is an 'upcoming' artist and doesn't yet have the biggest audience, she will gain a higher interest if her management promotes her. Salt Sisters can be promoted as a well known management company who manage multiple artists which are already very well known and because of this, it means they have a bigger following and can boost Savannah's following via the Salt Sisters Instagram and twitter.
Instagram is a simple, fun & creative way to capture, edit & share photos, videos & messages to any audience of your choice. It is very easily accessible via an app on either Android or iPhone and can also be accessed via the internet on a PC. For our Instagram we have used the same username as our twitter to make it easier to remember for viewers and creates a more professional appearance.

(@SaltSisters was already taken on both instagram and twitter which is why we added a number on the end)

The Instagram page will show updates in the form of pictures which for most viewers, can be more interesting than reading a portion of information without any images to help create an image in the viewers head. Updates via Instagram will usually be of the locations of where we have filmed for the music video 'Breathe Me' and will include pictures of the artist herself acting for the video.

Why is social media important?
The advent of social media has transformed the ways in which artists interact with each other, their public and the institutions that govern their careers. Services such as Facebook and Instagram have come to be regarded as essential spaces for emerging artists to share their work. Features on these social media links such as Instagram and the use of hashtags has "enabled collectors to instantly aggregate an artist’s content and also reveal public support for an artist."

With lots of people looking for careers in the music industry and with various contracts just moving around, there are channels created to allow those individuals on the outside to make their entry inside. There are new ways to get people hear your own music without the need to have the biggest recording company in your side. One of these is using social media to establish your music and your presence in the music business.

Social media is highly important to artists, especially to unsigned artists because this is a great tool to dispense their music to larger potential audience. This is something that artist aiming for promotion and exposure owe to the power of internet. With a big pool of potential music audience or consumers, promoting yourself and your music in social media sites is a real boom!
Moreover, there are numerous music social networking groups and organizations offering unsigned artists a chance to go with the flow of trends and competition in the music industry. Using social media and self promotion in this growing DIY music digital age is important especially if all other ways no longer works for unsigned artists.

In such way, you are able to get your music promotion back on track. Using social media and self promotion is proven to be an effective music strategy to brighten up your music career. If your music promotion no longer works, it is about time to tap on the power of social media to get the promotion and exposure that you have been long dreaming of.

Starting our social media interaction (Twitter)

You can now follow us! @SaltSisters11

Hi guys, we have now created a twitter to allow all our viewers and followers to interact with us on a bigger scale! Twitter is a service for people to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent message and on our twitter page we are able to post Tweets, which may contain photos, videos, links or just short bursts of information. On our twitter page you are able to look at updates of what filming is taking place for any upcoming videos, exclusive pictures which can only be seen on twitter, exciting information on any news or events and it is a place where you can talk to the artist yourself - ask questions, send your love, anything you want.. to a certain extent.

Here is the twitter page - because it is so easily accessible, we will be updating it a lot (!!) which you will not want to miss and the layout which you can see below will not always stay the same.

This isn't the only recent creation, we are also in the process of creating both an Instagram AND a Facebook page to interact with you guys and keep you updated. All 3 pages and social links will include exclusive news and pictures which can only be seen on that page so if I was you, I'd follow them all!.. No pressure.

Keep a look out for more updates on each social link via my blog, I will be posting once all three are  created and giving updates if any changes are made to the pages so that there is no confusion.

Why have a twitter account?
Twitter is a free social media network which has millions of users. This is a big marketing and branding opportunity for new and upcoming artists like Savannah (the artist) and gives new artists the opportunity to meet similar artists like themselves. The more you tweet - if its relevant - the more users will interact with you, follow, like, RT etc and your follower numbers are very likely to grow. Twitter is another marketing and promotion tool - you can update fans on any news including updates on music videos, new releases of songs/albums, promote other social media forms such as Instagram, Facebook or even your blog if you have one.

Twitter, similar to most social media networks now a days, enables you to use hashtages and directly target your niche and/or even widen your audience! If an artists hashtags a certain word related to their music for instance, #popmusic, people who are searching for new songs to listen to in the pop genre will come across this hashtag and OH LOOK, you've gained a new viewer in a couple of seconds!

Green Screen Practise

As you are awake from previous posts, a large proportion of our music video will be filmed using a green screen background which enables us to use a range of background colours, pictures or moving images; this helps us match the shots to are planned theme which is related to our song choice and its lyrics. In the video you can see a grey background which Eloise is sat in front of - not only this but the movement Eloise is making is important as this will be included in our final music video, so this practise shot allowed us to both view the motion of Eloise shaking her hair side to side (which is a video slowed down) along with using the green screen for the first time.

We used premiere pro to edit the clip and change the background to the grey, which can be seen below. I previously had to watch a couple of YouTube videos and also use some sites on Google to educate myself on how to use the tools on Premiere Pro. I have linked below one of the clips that I used to ensure the creator gets credit for their work*. I used both written forms of instructions, along with the videos on YouTube as that is the most convenient way for me to learn and leaves little room for mistakes.

What Went Well: After this, we were ensured we definitely wanted to use the hair flicking motion in our final music video as it portrays the artist as self loving and confident which is what we need as she has previously been abandoned and heart broken in the start of the music video and by including shots similar to this one (mid shot) of the artists face and body with a straight face, it portrays the assertiveness characteristic we are looking for.

Improvements: By doing the practise shot before filming and editing the final piece it allowed us to spot any mistakes which we can learn from and improve on next time to ensure we don't waste any time. This includes ensuring we use the green screen against a blank wall - in the practise shot we put the green screen in front of computers which reflected unwanted light back onto the screen and effected the colour when we changed it to grey. As well as this, we also know not to wear chunky pieces of jewellery around the neck which have any light reflecting materials in as this also impacted the clip and distorted the image of Eloise as she has specs of glitter shining across her in various places.
Not related to the green screen or the shots, I have also found we need to find a more convenient and ideal way to export the clips once we have edited them together. We want the music video to look the best quality possible to project a good standard of work and at the moment the clips are exporting rather pixelated which makes the work look more amateur.

First day of filming - Final Music Video

Hi guys, today we started filming part of our music video - EEK so exciting! We filmed in the location of a different town called Matlock and filmed for around 2 hours between 1-3PM which enabled us to firstly take a look round the area to see which areas were most appropriate for the shots and the theme we were going for and then, obviously, take the shots planned. It was a hard task as the weather was very gloomy with a wet floor (as it had previously rained) and a lot of fog looming - this put pressure on us to ensure we got ALL the shots needed in this location, as the chance of the weather being like this again was very slight which would create continuity errors in the final piece,

We chose Matlock as it is a very green, spacious area, with lots of pathways, outdoor staircases, hills and forestry backgrounds which was our ideal look! We wanted somewhere that would make the singer/artist look isolated and alone - which was the idea we were going for - as the song relates to abandonment and rejection.

The shots taken will appear in the final music video in Polaroids which will look like pictures instead of an actual video, flicking through time. This will hopefully help emphasise the artists lonesome movements and emotions as she wanders through an empty town. In these shots, there will be no lip syncing as we wanted to focus on portraying the feelings of the artist and telling a story and we felt as a group, if we was to add lip syncing in here, it would take the focus away.

Here is a sneak peak of the location we chose to shoot in:
The second photo (on the right), if clicked on shows an example of what we will be including in our music video, like stated above, they are Polaroid shots in the form of pictures instead of your typical video.

Moodboard - Ideas, Styles and Concepts

I put together a moodboard with key images that best convey the essence of the artist, song and music video I am creating. The images together put forward the type of effect and story we are aiming to tell through the song in the music video. This is a first attempt at a moodboard and helps me put my ideas together and adapt them to reach an ideal image for the music video.
(This will not be the only moodboard you will see and i'm sure the theme of the pictures will change alongside my ideas).

Here is the link to look more closely at the pictures -

UPDATE (on music video ideas)

So, I need to quickly update you guys on a crucial part of my music video that has changed. This will be brief as in reality, there's not much to say but I still need you to listen. BASICALLY, to put it short, the main character for the music video has changed. Previously, myself - Savannah, was going to be the artist/actor in the video, but we have changed the roles round and now Eloise will be playing the main role. This is a very simple manoeuvre and we feel it is for the best as Eloise has much better acting skills within the media industry and I am more confident behind the camera, so myself and Brooke will be doing the recording of the music video whilst Eloise is in front of the camera. Obviously, we have already created our shot list and know which shots/angles we are using throughout our video so the roles are fair.

However, to make things a little confusing, we are keeping the artists name as 'Savannah', as we feel it has a better length and will look better on the CD cover and website. This means Eloise will be performing as the artist, but she will have my name! Don't worry.. it's not confusing once you've seen the video, CD cover and website!

Check back this blog for any more updates!

Shot List

Hi guys, in terms of planning our music video, we have recently created a shot list (in replacement of a storyboard). A shot list is a full log of all the shots we want to include in our music video; essentially it is a checklist filled with minute details that will give our music video a sense of direction and efficiency. Shot lists help you consider shooting footage based on location and set up; not necessarily in order of the story. With a shot list ready you can more quickly shoot all the scenes at your chosen location and then shoot the rest at a later date. For example, in terms of my production, we are planning to shoot in Matlock (a location 30 minutes away from us), meaning we will try to take all these shots in one day in this location and with the shot list, we are able to tick off which shots we have taken as we go so we are assured, we have not left any out.

When filling in each row in the shot list, it’s important to take into consideration the following elements:
  • Characters in the shot
  • Type of shot
  • Camera movement
  • Major actions
  • Important objects
(The grand purpose of the shot list is to make sure that every part of the script is assigned a shot.)

As a group, we decided to create a shot list instead of a storyboard as we felt it would be more beneficial for ourselves. We already knew what all the angles we had mentioned looked like and the locations we were going to film in, so drawing these out was not time worthy and instead we wanted to focus on each individual shot and how many seconds we would use them for. In comparison to our thriller, our music video will have a lot more shots, which is another reason we thought the storyboard would not be time efficient.

For the shot list, you can see below, we used four main titles - shot, shot length, location and description. The shot represented the camera angle we would take the clip at; the clip length stated how long we would include it for; the location stated whether the shot would be in Matlock, outdoors or the studio, indoors; and the description shows a brief explanation on what we will be doing in each shot and the mis-en-scene, meaning we wrote down any props we needed. By creating this shot list, it ensured we had an idea for each second of the song and would be able to fill it and also, as it was created on a word document, it made it easy for us to go back in and change certain shots if we came up with new/better ideas.

As you can see from the shot list, there is multiple mistakes in the description part of the list where we mentioned Savannah instead of Eloise. Savannah (myself) was supposed to be the main artist for the video until we decided Eloise (another member of the group) would fit the role better, meaning we changed the character but decided to keep my name (Savannah) as we felt it was better for promotion and we had already started on the creation of the website. Where it says 'Savannah', please ignore it and remember, Eloise is the main artist. (To make more sense of this, please read my 'Salt Sisters Background' post).

The creation of the website

Hi Guys, my group and I have started to create our own website for the main artist 'Savannah Salt' (but played by Eloise Neath). The website is one of my ancillary tasks, along with a CD cover, which will go along side my music video for my coursework. This website will be similar to the aim of our social media links as it will provide, information, pictures, behind the scenes shots, updates etc. However, along with all this, it will be the place where you can find out the most detail about the artist. The website will include background information on Savannah, contact information, the social media links, tour dates and all the artists' music.

The website is a long and hard process to create as we have to use a theme that represents the artist in the right way- this includes using the correct colours for backgrounds and choosing appropriate fonts, so that the website appears professional. Along with this, we need to ensure the website is easily accessible to get to and navigate around so to do this we have added search bars and clear labels at the top of the screen in a bigger font so it is clear they are the main tabs.

The overall theme we have gone for is very simplistic and we have ensured we do not overcrowd the screen on each page of the website as this can easily put people off. When we have included long stretches of information, we have tried to keep it concise and to the point so that the person reading does not get bored or click off straight away. The majority of the writing on the screen (ranging from one worded titles to labels to long descriptions) are in black or a dark green colour with an easy readable font. The simplicity of the website is purposely because we have marketed 'Savannah' as a new and upcoming artist and we want it to appear that she doesn't know exactly what her genre and theme is herself; she is only young and has previously sang a range of songs in a variety of genres.

We have ensured we have included pictures and videos on every page so that it is approachable and it allows the audience to feel like they're getting to know her more the more they go through the website. The 'HOME' page is very basic with a picture of the artist covering the majority of the screen, with her name next to it and her newest song release below it. This allows the reader to create their own view on the artist before reading more in-depth about her. We didn't want to fill the home page with lots of information or very feminine pictures or colours because we want to keep the audience bracket as wide as possible and if we was to fill the home page with teenage pop songs or gifs, this would instantly put off certain readers and reduce the amount of people who are interested in her, before they have even read further into her story.

If you want to read on about the other aspects of the website, keep your eye out for the next update which will be on the 'ABOUT' and 'MUSIC' features of the website!
